What is PDS?
Based on state-of-the-art Precision Differential GPS system, the PDS allows automatic and accurate acquisition of container locations during loading and unloading, hence eliminating human errors and ensuring containers are moved to the right locations all the time.
The Position Detection System captures the location of container automatically during loading and unloading by the Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes in the yard and updates the location in the Container Terminal Management System (CTMS). Some features and advantages of PDS are:
The concept behind PDS:
- Differential GPS with RTK (Real Time Kinematic) provides continuous and accurate positional data of RTG crane.
- Fixed base station allows correctional data to be sent to rover GPS (mobile GPS onboard RTG) so that a sub-metric or better accuracy on the rover is achieved.
- PDS controller interfaces to crane signals like twistlock activation and encoder position and calculates the final position of spreader (container).
- Tier or height of container stack can be derived by means of a digital encoder.
- Gantry and hoist encoders can be installed to provide backup positional data in case DGPS fails or its accuracy is not acceptable.
- Digital Yard Map allows accurate mapping of GPS coordinates into actual location data.
- PDS controller sends actual location data via onboard Radio Data Terminal back to CTMS for database update.
Features and benefit of PDS
Automatic recording of container location when loading/unloading and relocation.
Reduce error due to manual entry of container location.
Intelligent stacking, improves yard utilization.
Reduce misplaced containers.
Prevent unauthorized move.
Immediate update of container location in CTMS.
Provide RTG status for monitoring.
Speed up overall yard operations.
Can make use of existing WiFi network for correctional data transmission
