A Tribute to the late Mr Larry Lam, Visionary Founder of Portek, Mentor and Friend

12th Feb 2014

Singapore – Portek International Pte Ltd (‘Portek’) is sad to inform that Mr Larry Lam, its founder and former chairman, passed away on 11th February 2014. Mr Lam passed on with his family close by his side. He was 62 years old.

Mr Larry Lam founded Portek in 1988 and pioneered many aspects of the port equipment engineering business. Notably amongst these were the turnkey sales or lease of refurbished ship-to-shore gantry cranes and rubber-tyred gantry cranes. Portek in the 1990s and early 2000s was responsible for relocation of no less than 300 such cranes the world over, enabling many ports in emerging economies to benefit from the cost-effective procurement and use of modern container handling equipment enabling such economies to benefit immeasurably from the increased port productivity.

From 2000, Mr Larry Lam led Portek’s expansion as a niche terminal operator synergising Portek’s already well-established port equipment engineering capabilities with port management expertise. This combination led to the establishment of several niche container and multi-purpose terminals managed and equipped by Portek in Indonesia, Africa and Europe.

Mr Larry Lam, through his enterprising and “can-do” spirit in business, has impacted the lives of many, directly and indirectly. His generous nature extended beyond business into areas of community work and philanthropy as well.

As for those of us at Portek, we will always remember him fondly as our mentor and our friend.
