BEJAIA MEDITERRANEAN TERMINAL CELEBRATES HANDLING ONE MILLION TEUS

20th December 2012

Singapore – Portek operated container facility in Algeria, Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal SPA (BMT) handled its first millionth TEU since its inception. Barely 7 years since the start of its 20- year concession, BMT, a joint venture between Entreprise Portuaire de Bejaia (EPB) and Portek of Singapore, has seen significant year-on-year increases since it commenced full operations in 2006. With annual throughput of about 200,000 TEUs, BMT is now the second busiest container facility in Algeria, enjoying double digit growth annually. In 2006, throughput was only about 50,000 TEUs.

Mr Takao Omori, CEO of Portek, commented, “Indeed this is a landmark event, proving once again how cooperation between progressive and forward-looking national authorities such as EPB, combined with the management and engineering expertise of Portek can result in a veritable pillar of success in port privatisation. We owe much to our partner, EPB and the entire team at BMT for this most significant milestone achievement.”

Headquartered in Singapore, Portek is a global medium-sized terminal operator and port equipment engineering solutions provider, with offices in over 10 countries throughout Africa, Europe and Asia.
