Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal Takes Delivery Of Two Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes And Its Second Mobile Harbour Crane

31st March 2015

Bejaia, Algeria – Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal (“BMT”), a joint venture between Entreprise Portuaire de Bejaia (EPB) and Portek of Singapore, has taken delivery of two new Kalmar E-One2 rubber tyred gantry cranes (“RTGs”), bringing to 10 the total number of RTGs at the terminal. The RTGs are capable of stacking containers one-over-seven high, span six container rows and a roadway, and have a lifting capacity of 41 tonnes.

BMT expanded its fleet of equipment further by purchasing a Liebherr LHM 420 mobile harbour crane (“MHC”). The MHC, with an outreach of 48m and a maximum lifting capacity of 124 tonnes, is capable of serving a wide variety of vessels, from handy-sized to post-panamax class.

The new cranes have been mounted and commenced full operations at BMT. Other equipment at BMT includes 2 STS gantry cranes and a Gottwald MHC. The new equipment at BMT will play a significant role in boosting berth and yard productivity at BMT.

Nassib Barchiche, BMT’s Director General commented, “BMT has seen significant year-on-year increases in annual throughput since it commenced full operations. Annual throughput has grown from hardly 40,000 TEUs in 2004 to about 250,000 TEUs in 2014. We are fully committed to increasing the productivity of operations at our terminal and we have been investing heavily in order to achieve this. The new equipment will also allow our engineering department to improve the preventive maintenance program.”

Mr Takao Omori, CEO of Portek International added, “We are delighted to have this latest addition to BMT’s handling capacity. We have always and continue to be fully committed to increasing the productivity of operations. This latest investment is completely in line with Portek’s philosophy of enabling all the terminals managed and operated by us to maximise throughput and accelerate growth.”

Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

June 24th, 2014 by admin.phq | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

The CEO of Portek, Mr Takao Omori with the various other dignitaries at the cake cutting ceremony.

Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

19th June 2014

Bejaia, Algeria – Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal (“BMT”) commemorated its 10th anniversary on 9th June 2014 with a day of celebrations which included tributes paid to all past and current management team members of BMT and those of its shareholders, Entreprise Portuaire de Bejaia (“EPB”) and Portek.

Amongst the other participants were CEOs of some of the other state-owned Algerian port operating companies and the Chairman and CEO of SOGEPORTS, the state-owned holding company of all Algerian port operating companies.

It was clear to all participants that BMT’s achievements growing its throughput from hardly 40,000 TEUs in 2004 to more than 250,000 TEUs in 2013 (or a compounded annual growth rate of more than 21%), could not have been achieved without the hard work and vision of the various CEOs (and their management teams) of EPB, Portek and BMT throughout the last ten years.

Just as there had been many challenges that had been overcome in the past, many more obstacles lie ahead in BMT’s path. However, BMT remains quietly confident that these too will also be surmounted such that even greater successes may be achieved.

The celebrations concluded with cake cutting ceremony and the traditional birthday song.
