Riga, Latvia – On 3rd and 4th June 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport of Latvia organised one of the most significant events to promote relations with Latvia’s trading partners. It was also the largest forum in Latvia’s transport sector – the Riga High Level Conference on Transport, Logistics and Trade Routes, “Connecting Asia with Europe”.
The event was aimed at promoting active discussions among policy-makers, businesses and think-tanks on the development of transport connections and trade routes. The forum was held within the framework of China and Central and Eastern Europe cooperation programme (16+1). The opening addresses were delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Mr Edgars Rinkēvičs, the Minister of Transport, Mr Anrijs Matīss and the Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Transport, Mr Weng Meng Yong. Alongside the highest-ranking Latvian and Chinese officials, the participants included ministers or deputy ministers from Afghanistan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Romania and Tajikistan.
The forum also brought together more than 100 enterprises from the transport, trade and financial sectors. These included the Export & Import Bank of China, China Railway Corporation (China), Russian Railways (РЖД) and its related entities, Community of European railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) and Portek International Pte Ltd.
Portek was represented by its CEO, Mr Takao Omori and members of the top management of Riga Universal Terminals, Mr Ricky Yong and Mr Janis Kasalis. Apart from presenting at the forum about Portek and Riga Universal Terminal, Mr Omori also met with various Latvian authorities such as the Prime Minister of Latvia, Mrs Laimdota Straujuma, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and LIAA (Latvian Investment Agency) as well as the Ambassador of Japan in Latvia.
