Portek Expands its Terminal Operations Portfolio Through Acquisition of Rigas Universalais Terminals SIA

17th April 2013

Singapore – Portek International has expanded its portfolio of container and multipurpose terminals with the acquisition of 80% of the share capital of Rigas Universalais Terminals SIA (“RUT”).  Following the acquisition, RUT, located in Riga, the capital city of Latvia, will become an integral part of Portek, an international port operator.

Commenting on this latest transaction, Mr Takao Omori, CEO of Portek, said, “We are indeed pleased to be able to expand Portek’s global footprint with the addition of RUT into our portfolio. RUT, with a motivated workforce and a progressive management team, holds tremendous potential for expansion in the Baltic and we are confident that RUT will add significant strategic value to Portek’s long term growth.”

With a view to realizing the considerable synergies following this transaction, the existing management team of RUT will continue their excellent work in the RUT and will be joined by new managers from Portek who will bring their international port operations and management expertise to bear in the next phase of RUT’s business development.

RUT will also gain from Portek’s port equipment engineering experience and close links with shipping lines and cargo owners. Portek, through RUT, will be able to develop its reach into the container, wood and frozen food handling markets in and around the Baltic Sea.

RUT operates in Riga Free Port and owns the following subsidiaries:

  • BFT SIA, which is the only transit cold storage in Riga Free port and one of the leading cold storages among the Baltic Sea terminals;
  • UT Komunalserviss SIA, which develops and maintain the terminal infrastructure (electricity, water supply and other communications in the terminal area) operated by RUT;
  • Alpha Express SIA, which is the railway marshaling company in the terminal area, handling more than 2 million tons of cargo annually.

RUT is currently the fifth largest port operator by volume of cargo in Riga Free port, handling more than 2.5 million tons of cargoes annually. The company serves both transit and export of general and bulk cargoes. It is also a leading player in the handling of wood products and frozen food. Container volumes have grown with 2012 annual container throughput of 77,000 TEUs.
